I know nothing about Eugene Reunier except that his real name was Carl Breuer-Courth, that he was born in 1884, and that he died in 1960. Oh, and he drew bob-haired ‘flappers’. As always, it’s hard to know what’s going on in the mind of the artist; for example, what is behind drawing No.4 below, in which a sardonic little Pierette entices the viewer, whose shadow is beginning to touch the kerb? Amongst Reunier’s harem scenes, peopled with willowy girls from the 12920s, there is suddenly a sinister menace. Ooh…
