Ask Morgana 190: John Neill Rodger

John Neill Rodger (1941-2013) was a South African painter in the neo-realist style. He was a very prolific artist, painting landscapes, people, interiors, etc. His nude young women have a next-door-beauty, and sometimes seem to inhabit a dream space, giving his paintings a surreal quality. I love them, and yes, they do have an erotic quality too.

I have a question for my followers – please feel free to comment by email. The vast majority of the women portrayed in this series of posts are of European heritage. Is the depiction of nudes a particularly Western concept? Is there something cultural that makes the depiction of, say, women of African or Asian heritage less usual? What do you think?
