Paul Gillon (1926-2011) only became an illustrator of comics and graphic novels after considering careers in other creative milieux. With pen in hand he became one of France’s leading lights in the comic-book world. His style – hi-tech and minimalist at one extreme, minutely detailed at the other – included portrayals of young women who looked like Mireille Mathieu and France Gall, who bathed in wooden tubs while medieval nuns fetched the water, or were serviced by sci-fi androids.
