Ask Morgana 182: Antoine Molinero
Antoine Molinero was born in Provence in 1948, has exhibited internationally, but is associated with St Martin in the West Indies. As an artist he is not alone these days in marrying the terms ‘realism’ and ‘expressionism’. Realism is conveyed in his paintings by form, expressionism by colour. He claims to treat his nude female figures the same way as he treats landscapes. I see what he means, but I also see a very traditional relationship here between artist and nude model. Moreover, I see him dress his paintings in titles suggesting we should take the subject to represent or symbolise something else – lunar, dream, tenderness. Thus he puzzles me a little. What is beyond doubt, however, is his skill with the brush, his use of dazzling colour, and the beauty of his subjects.
