Ask Morgana 178: Frank Cho
If you have ever wondered how to master the art of modern cheesecake comic art, then ask Frank Cho, the Korean-American artist. He is actually one of the most superb comic draughtsmen of the age, in fact, when it comes to eroticake, he wrote the manual (see below). He blogs under ‘Apes and Babes’, has published under ‘Cheesecake and Critters’, and seeds his stuff with sly, quirky humour. He is dogged by criticism for misogyny and exploitation – “it’s not ‘just a joke’!” say his critics, notably about the series of lampoons Cho did based on a spiked Spider-Woman cover by Milo Manara – but there is a world of difference between ‘joke’ and ‘irony’ and I believe some people ought to get that who currently don’t. Cho is not tearing into our image of women, but into our pomposity, and every time we whinge he strikes again. I believe if we all held up our hands and said “Yeah, yeah, okay, you made your point, we get it!” he would retire to a neutral corner. Some hope…
