Ask Morgana 176: Svetlana Valueva
Svetlana Valueva was born in the Soviet Union in 1965. A child prodigy encouraged by her father, who was also an artist, she won prizes for her paintings in the officially-approved ‘Socialist realism’ style. In private she was fascinated by Art Nouveau, and painted in a style that recalled Klimt, Mucha, and japonaiserie. Her women are posed with a flowing, organic elegance in an imaginary world where symbol and reality mix.
