Ask Morgana 166: Christian Schad

The name of the game just lately appears to be finding artists who reference Ingres. I admit that’s what first drew my eye to the work of Christian Schad (1894-1982), as you can see from the above painting which recalls Ingres’ ‘La Grande Odalisque’, though rendered in Schad’s ‘New Objectivity’ style, shorn of all romanticism.

Schad was never an ‘erotic artist’ as such. However, if there was something erotic to present, he presented it in a very matter-of-fact way, typical of the ‘New Objectivity’ movement. Two examples follow.
