Ask Morgana 148: Georges Barbier
Georges Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the foremost French illustrators of the early 20c. His style seems to blend the sinuous, organic shapes of Art Nouveau, the symmetry and flat surfaces of Art Deco, and the frivolity of kitsch. His nude and semi-nude women are highly stylised and remind the viewer of the attitude of figures on classical Greek vases. I have selected seven examples for you.
(1) is a detail from La Luxure, which means more than simply ‘luxury’ but also implies the act or state of luxuriating in something. (4) and (6) are faux-18c kitsch, and probably represent Laclos’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses. (5) is an illustration for Les Chansons de Bilitis by Pierre Louÿs.
