Ask Morgana 127: Leone Frollo
We’re moving away from ‘high art’ today. It is almost refreshing not to have to second-guess an artist. There is no doubt at all what Leone Frollo (1931-) is up to. Working from 1948, Frollo specialised in illustrating erotic comic books – see (1) and (2) below. Later he abandoned that work in favour of simply making erotic images in watercolour, pastel, and pencil. To my eye, there is sometimes a hint of the naive in his style, something that just misses its mark by a milimetre. However, he is having a great deal of fun, simply indulging his own fantasies, drawing young women in a faux-belle-époque to 1920s style. No argument, this is deliberately erotic stuff, a bloke idealising lesbians, objectifying the Mata Hari he imagines in us. He also goes for mild bondage – he has made drawings of Bettie Page lookalikes with their wrists bound – and sado-masochism.
Whatever – he’s all over the internet. That almost makes selecting from his work a problem, but I have done my best with what’s below. What do you think of them? I would like to know.
By the way, because of the content of a couple of these pictures I am deliberately tagging this post ‘adult’. To what effect I don’t know.
