Ask Morgana 088: ‘Angelique’

Okay, today we’re having a ‘who the heck?’ moment. Back when Xena, Warrior Princess was a low-budget, cult TV show, the makers began to realise that its portrayal of the relationship between Xena (Lucy Lawless) and her sidekick Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) was drawing a following of lesbian viewers. They played up to that, and though that side of the pair’s relationship always steered south of explicitness, its near-misses were, frankly, pretty cool. Unsurprisingly, the show generated its fair share of femslash fanfic, art, and more latterly photoshop fakes. In the late 1990s a handful of drawings by a fan identified as ‘Angelique’ appeared on the internet. They showed some draughtsman-like talent, but they clearly were by an amateur. It is possible to find some two dozen still in various locations on the web, but no information about the artist.

I’m not going to hold these up as great art, even great erotic art, but there is one picture I do find very engaging, so I am going to share it with you. Angelique extended the relationship between Lucy’s and Renee’s characters beyond Xena to a little-known novel, Josie and Rebecca – The Western Chronicles by B L Miller. For what it’s worth, here is the picture, in which Renee appears to be getting splinters out of Lucy’s behind…
