Ask Morgana 075: Audrey Kawasaki
Audrey Kawasaki (1982-) is a Californian artist whose typical work is the creation in oil on wood of images of young women. Her style seems to combine art nouveau and manga whilst hinting at the influence of Klimt and Mucha. I love the way her figures flow from the wood grain, and then sometimes despite the grain. Follow her on Twitter at @AudreyKawasaki.
Image 1 below is slightly atypical, sketch-like. Images 2, 3, and 4 are in her most popular style, but I love image 5 where the sleepy, japonesque maiden is pursued by miniature demons. In image 4 a young woman appears to be sitting in a garden, until the viewer realises that the scene is under water, and her hair is floating upwards – a wonderful use of the grain.
