Ask Morgana 009: Maud Jeffries

ed24c Maud JeffriesMaud Evelyn Craven Jeffries (1869-1946) was born in the State of Mississippi in 1869, and spent much of her later life in Australia, where she settled. A minor actress in the USA, she was given her big chance by English impresario Wilson Barrett, and became his ‘leading lady’ with incredible speed. Her most famous role was that of ‘Mercia’ in Barrett’s The Sign of the Cross, a melodrama set in ancient Rome which, despite its plot being almost indistinguishable from that of Quo Vadis, was a great success. The play had its debut in New York in 1895 on Broadway, and then transferred to London.

The picture below is dated 1896, which probably means that it was taken in London, or at least distributed there as publicity for the London production.
